Keto Mulled Wine: Low Carb Holiday Punch

This hot keto mulled wine recipe is an easy, low carb holiday punch that you can put together quickly or simmer in a slow cooker. There’s only 1 carb in each 3/4 cup sized serving so you can experience a Dickens Christmas without ending up looking like old Mr. Scrooge himself.

For this keto mulled wine recipe you’ll need: Merlot, apple cider rooibos tea, sugar free brown sugar cinnamon syrup, orange tangerine water enhancer drops, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, cardamom, and gin.

Happy Holidays !

Hot mulled wine is an iconic part of Christmas. Imagine a warm glass of mulled wine in your hands and savoring the sweet-spicy mulling spice aroma that rises from the cup. Do you think of the Holidays when you hear the words mulled wine? It’s a wonderful way to scent your house for a Thanksgiving family gathering, Christmas dinner, or New Years Eve party!

Does mulled wine have sugar in it?

The thing is that there’s tons of carbs in hot mulled wine. Unfortunately sugar is usually added as well as fruit juice so the carb count jumps quite a lot. I’ve used a sugar free syrup instead of the sugar. Instead of all the sugar in fruit juice, I use a spiced rooibos tea instead of the fruit juice. To complete this low carb recipe, I use a little sugar free orange water enhancer to round out the flavor.

Since I’m not simmering this in the slow cooker, I used ground spices. No problem if you want to. You can certainly use your slow cooker or crockpot I’m just usually making it for myself and no one else so I don’t need 6 quarts sitting around. While brandy is often added to regular mulled wine we’re going to use a highly flavored gin. I like Citadelle brand gin for this.

That’s really how to make this keto mulled wine recipe. It’s ready to be carried into the family room and sipped while you watch the Hallmark Channel. Guilt free!

Keto cocktails for the holidays

What is it about mulled wine, cranberry sauce, and that exotic smell of star anise and clove during the holidays? While white wine is nice to drink during the warmer months, hot dry red wine turned into mulled wine with spices is what makes this recipe perfect for the holidays.

When I was a kid, my mom used to love to drink her spiced wine during the holidays. To make a low carb version, I looked for the most keto wine I could find, that I liked of course. Either Merlot, Chianti, or Cabernet Sauvignon are your best low carb red wine choices. My sugar free sweetener of choice for keto cocktails are sugar free water enhancers for this low carb mulled wine recipe. You get all the flavor or regular alcoholic drinks with orange juice and lime juice but without all the sugar.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup Merlot , I used CK Mondavi
  • 2 teaspoons Apple Cider Rooibos Tea , I used Teavana
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar Free Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Syrup , I used Torani
  • 1/8 teaspoon orange tangerine water enhancer , I used MIO
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • pinch cloves
  • pinch ginger
  • pinch cardamom
  • 1 ounce gin , I used Citadelle because it’s very herbaceous

Instructions

  • Heat the water to 208F and stir in the 2 teaspoonfuls of loose tea.
  • Let steep for 6 minutes and strain. Set aside.
  • Warm the wine up on the stove until it is just starting to steam but not really simmering.
  • Stir in the syrup, the spices, and the water enhancer.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the gin.
  • Serve immediately garnished with a cinnamon stick if desired.

Notes

?
If you’d like you can make this in a slow cooker – heat on low for 2 to 4 hours or until very hot then switch to the “warm” setting. If you use a slow cooker then you can use whole spices instead of the ground spices if you wish. Add the gin just before serving… I used Citadel gin because it has more juniper flavor than most and I especially enjoy it in this punch.
