It might seem kind of strange to us today, but people in the 1950s and 60s took parties to an entirely new level. It’s really the first time in history that the middle class had enough free time and disposable income to create wild theme parties on a regular basis. I mean, there were dinner parties where people actually dressed up to come to your house. Imagine Hawaiian luau parties complete with torches and grass skirts, poker parties, and … well… you name it.
I was growing up during that time and I can remember sitting on the stairs and watching my parents sip a and laugh with their friends. I can remember sleepily sitting in my dad’s lap, looking up at the stars, and listening to the guests’ voices turn into a buzz. As I nodded off during Hawaiian Luaus by the pool, I though my parents’ parties were elegant and magical. I imagined that someday I’d grow up and throw those amazing parties, too.
Life is so different now, isn’t it? Those kinds of parties are way out of style – most of us don’t have the time nor the disposable income to throw them. But, good news! We can still enjoy those great tiki drinks that were so very popular!

Low Carb Caribbean Rum Punch
- 1 1/2 ounces dark rum
- 1 ounce light rum
- 1/3 teaspoon coconut pineapple water enhances
- 10 drops orange water enhancer
- 1/3 ounce lime juice
- 6 ounces club soda or diet lemon-lime or diet gingerale soft drink
- Lime slices for garnish
- Add the dark rum, light rum, water enhancers, lime juice, and ice to a shaker.
- Shake gently and strain into a chilled glass of ice.
- Carefully pour in the club soda (or lemon-lime or gingerale)
- Garnish with a slice of lime.
